FAQ

1What does The Dog-go Project do?
The Dog-go Project is a non-profit association that works with some certified shelters that rescue dogs in extreme situation of neglect, or abuse, it rehabilitates them and gives them a second chance finding them a family in Canada.
2Where are they located?
In Puebla, Mexico.
3Why Canada specifically?
Canada is one of the countries with the smallest stray dog population, due to the fact that most people neuter their pets and they have very strict laws against animal cruelty that include animal abandonment with fines of up to 50,000 CAD or 6 months jail time. Since 2012 in many cities in Canada like Toronto, Richmond and Mississauga the selling of pets is forbidden in pet shops, hence the culture of adoption is very developed. Only 10% of the cases that are reported to the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) are euthanized, in most cases the reason is either they are aggressive or have a terminal illness. Compared to other countries like the United States which is 60%.
4Can I adopt if I live in Mexico?
We have very few cases of adoption in Mexico. We believe that there are many organizations who have a lot of dogs waiting for a family, most of our dogs already have potential adopters in Canada, so we leave that space open for other organizations in Mexico that also need adoptive families.
5How do you send the dogs to Canada?
The way in which we send the dogs to Canada is through flight parents, people who travel to Canada and are willing to take some dogs as luggage. Visit the “flight parents” section in our website: www.thedoggoproject.org
6Do you pay for the plane ticket?
No, the association does not pay for any flight ticket, it only pays for the dogs fee. Only if you already bought your flight ticket, you can apply to be a Flight Parent.
7Does it have any cost for me to be a Flight Parent?
No, the association runs with all the expenses generated by the dogs you take. In case you need to pay anything to immigration, you can keep your receipt and the association will repay you.
8What do I do with the dogs once I have arrived in Canada?
Once you are in Canada, after you pick them up in the “oversized luggage” area and go through immigration, there will be someone from one of our sister associations waiting for the dogs.
9How much extra time will I spend on my trip for taking the dogs?
From 45 minutes to an hour and a half.
10Is there any risk of not being allowed to get in?
No, all of our dogs comply with the veterinary protocol and the required paperwork to be allowed into Canada. We will give you all the documents, together with the dogs at the airport.
11Can it be any city in Canada?
Only flights to Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Calgary.
12Can it be any airline?
We work with AirCanada, Interjet and WestJet.
13I have a connection flight, can I be a Flight Parent?
No, the dogs can only travel on direct flights.
14Does it have to be from Mexico City only or can it be from any other city?
Only flights going from Mexico City or Cancun.
15How can I help?
We have 4 main ways in which you can help:
  1. Being a Flight Parent: Helping us taking the dogs to Canada with their new families.
  2. Kennels: If you travel from Canada to Mexico, you can help us by bringing empty kennels so we can keep sending dogs.
  3. Donations in kind: We always need dog food, medical equipment, kennels, etc.
  4. Directly in our bank account or through PayPal.
16If I rescued a dog and I want to give it up for adoption in Canada through your association, can I do it?
We can´t send dogs that we don´t know for safety reasons, since we follow a very strict veterinary and behaviour protocol. The process is as follows: - Bring the dog to the city of Puebla (in case he is in a different city) - To pay approximately 3 months of pension in a pension we have an agreement with ($1,500 per month). Including food. - Pay for the veterinary protocol (vaccines, spaying/neutering, tests) - Pay for the travel expenses *All the expenses have to be paid in advance
17Do you receive dogs in the shelter in case of a rescue?
The Dog-go Project is NOT a shelter and the shelters we work with, as any other shelter in Mexico are overpopulated due to the lack of adoptions and lack of awareness on spaying and neutering. We need to raise awareness about the commitment and responsibility that comes with having a pet.
